I am new here and new to BPD. My 19 year old daughter has been recently diagnosed. We are living in quarantine and it feels like some sort of psychological torture experiment. She is having “outbursts” (I don’t know what else to call them) almost daily. I have no idea what to do or how to help. I don’t know how to cope either. She has a younger brother who is struggling to cope as well. She has not been set up with a therapist yet. The Psychologist recommended Lamictal but has not yet called in a prescription. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi jmg2000,
First of all I have to say I’m so sorry for what you and your fan are going through. I understand every ounce of your pain. My daughter is 18 and was diagnosed end of January. We have been going through hell with her since she was 13. Her younger brother isn’t doing well living in this household. It takes such a terrible toll on everyone sometimes I think my daughter’s illness is going to destroy our family.
All I can say is read all you can about the illness and get yourself a therapist and some good self care routines.
I sympathize with you about being in quarantine with your daughter. My daughter has been spending time with her boyfriend now and then and I relish the time she is out of the house we all do.
I’m having a really hard time validating my daughter during her emotional dumping episodes and we are all suffering because of it.
My daughter takes escitalopram and was supposed to start a new med when Covid hit but we decided she was already not faring well with so much turmoil already going on so we will consider trying a new med in the future instead.
Also look into DBT THERAPY it’s supposed to be very effective for BPD.
Hang in there and I wish you and your family the best moving forward.
Hugs
