Before you can make things better, you have to stop making them worse... Have you considered that being critical, judgmental, or invalidating toward the other parent, no matter what she or he just did will only make matters worse? Someone has to be do something. This means finding the motivation to stop making things worse, learning how to interrupt your own negative responses, body language, facial expressions, voice tone, and learning how to inhibit your urges to do things that you later realize are contributing to the tensions.

Except now, I have no fear of the mines.

She looks great.  Looked great before she went.

Came back and I said "I'm digging it, looks great!  What all did you get done?"

Haircut and highlights was the answer.

I came back with "I'm digging it" (very happy and positive tone)

Then I ask, " Are you happy with it?"  "did you like the hairdresser".  (first time to this one).

She stands and looks weird, kinda like I am supposed to say something else.

I ask again, "Are you happy with it?"

No response, kids ask her something, she engages them, I wander off.

Perhaps later I'll say something again about how nice she looks.  We'll see.  Goal is to say nice things and not take bait.

What all did you get done?

Maybe she thinks you should have noticed what she had done instead of asking. Been there on this one.

hey baby your haircut and highlights look awesome!

Just trying to guess

Yep, laughing inside trying to be supportive on the outside.

Couple instance since then of "obviously ignoring me" when I am speaking about simple matters.

No bait taking,

Dude. Really? Is this your first day?  Laugh out loud (click to insert in post)

There is only one comment you can make on a woman's hair. "It looks great!" "I love it" is also acceptable. Advanced practitioners may try other adjectives, like "hot" or "stylish."

This is true no matter the situation. Even if her head is literally on fire.

Now go stand in the corner and think about what you did.  Smiling (click to insert in post)

Yes, mine would always ask me how he looked... .if he looked good. Did I like his outfit, Laugh out loud (click to insert in post) Sometimes he would have mismatched things on... .I would correct him... .not sure if he liked that or not, really. It is always some kind of test!

That's pretty funny,

I can be the cludo one about fashion.   If it's a suit, I can put that together just fine.  But other than that, especially if I am trying to blend colors, my wife backs me up.  She's pretty good at that.

The correct course of action is the same as if she asked, ":)o these jeans make my butt look big?"... .

Fake a massive coronary to avoid answering.

Then I ask... " Are you happy with it?"

Oooh total fail!

All you can say is "you look amazing". Doesn't matter what she did with it!

Same answer to " do these jeans make my butt look big?"

you look amazing

"does this dress make me look fat"?

you look amazing

Now, go tell her she looks amazing, you love the hair. If that doesn't work, try flowers.  Being cool (click to insert in post)
