Before You Can Make Things Better, You Have to Stop Making Things Worse

"Someone has to be first. This means generating the motivation to stop making things worse, learning how to interrupt your own negative responses, and learning how to inhibit your urges to do things that you later realize are destructive to the relationship."

This article, adapted from Alan Fruzetti, PhD's book The High Conflict Couple: A Dialectical Behavior Therapy Guide to Finding Peace, Intimacy, & Validation, guides you through the process of changing your behavior in order to bring more balance and peace to your relationship. If we wait for our loved ones with BPD to change, we may wait a lifetime. This guide is for those who are committed to taking the step that will change the relationship dynamic and stop the cycle of destruction that is hurting both you and your partner.
