Dealing with financial conflict

My default would have been to appease on this. I guess I am a pushover, but I'd consider that it is Christmas and with company and kids at the table, I'd rather keep the peace. I'd like to think I would not have defaulted on everything, but I tend to do it because, well I don't care enough about meat to take a stand on it, and if the guests want meat, they can eat something later. As long as there is plenty of food, the guests won't be hungry.

That said, my H is very unhappy if there isn't meat for him to eat at the table. Meat for him is a much bigger deal than it is for me. I think that's part of the balance. The one who cares the least may be the one to default to the other for whom is may matter a lot.

I think if I was in defogger's shoes I would want to discuss the dinner plans further and find out what she is thinking. It may be more about taking a stand and presenting a vegetarian meal for Christmas than accommodating the choices of guests. In this case, meat at the table would ruin that.

Then there is the underlying issue about money for moving but buying a prime rib isn't on the level of buying a house. It may be more about " you have the money for what you want than what I want".
