I have a doctors appointment next week and plan to talk to my doctor about it and see what my options are. Just wanted to ask others in a similar situation as me what they've done?
Have you taken any types of medication? did it help? or what have you done to cope?
Coping: I used to drink myself into blackouts. Not an option anymore. My pwBPD is a pothead. I've been going to REBT group sessions for about four months now. My W is still a pothead. To be fair, she's also on 4 medications.
Medication: I'm not going to say which ones I'm on, because there is absolutely no reason to put ideas into your head. There are so many medications out there to treat so many different symptoms.
Are they helping? I don't know. I'm doing better, but that progress has come from being sober, taking medication, seeing therapists and writing for hours to put my thoughts in order. Soul searching. I can confidently say that one of the medications I'm on has helped me sleep uninterrupted for 6-7 hours a night... .for the first time in my life.
Your doctor: Are you talking PCP, or a psych?
What I've done: I don't want to worry you, but hey, you asked... .It took me three years to find the right therapists and medication. Is that typical? I have no idea. The amount of B.S. I had to deal with is... .um... .B.S, although I don't think about it too often. I've learned to avoid dwelling on the past. That took a while, but it helps. I'm still pretty screwed up over the fact I was thrown into a psychiatric facility against my will for no legitimate reason, but I'm addressing that frustration.
Suggestions: Don't give yourself over to your doctors. Take an active role. Go to (legitimate!) sources to learn about medications they suggest, and their side effects. Answer questions honestly, but be aware of responses they might misinterpret. Ask questions, and if they don't answer them, ask the questions again, or reword them. Please avoid leaving a doctor's office if you're confused about anything.
