Searching for RTC

We have a D16 with emerging BPD.  Her Therapist and Phsyciatrist are recommendend RTC and we are trying to find a place close to home (central NC) that accepts our insurance.  I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge about Springbrook in South Carolina or ParkRidge Valley in Tenn.  So far we have only had Out patient therapy with no Acute care (though we've been close a several times).  We are hoping to be proactive and get her help before things progress to far.  If you have any information on these two facilities, I would  appreciate hearing it.   Thanks

So glad to have you here.

I don't have any experience or knowledge of the two RTC's in your area.  Are they highly recommended by your d's t and pdoc?  Is their location the reason they are under consideration?

My dd16 graduated from Falcon Ridge Ranch in Virgin Utah 2+ years ago and is doing very well still.  I have done a great deal of research on RTC's for young girls and don't remember either of those facilities meeting my search criteria.

What are you looking for in a program for your d16 to have the best chance of getting the help she needs?

Still working through the abbreviations.  I should have said dd16.  D BPD.  Location is important to us.  I feel that family therapy is important and want to be as much of a part as possible and still keep my job.  Insurance is another consideration.  We have Magellan, which I have heard is bad.  dd16 is agreeable to RTC, so we are also trying to find somewhere she likes.  She does not want a "clinical/hospital" environment, but looking more for "camp" like environment.  t and pdoc recommended a couple of places, some too far away and some not in insurance.  These are the two we've narrowed it down to.  Although Timberline Knolls in Chicago is not completely out of the question.  It would not allow me to participate in family t, but my wife could some of the time.  We are also going to talk to Mason consulting in the morning.  They are $$$ and not sure what they can do that we've not already done.  t is recommending DBT, but says CBT is ok.   Will post on new member’s board soon, I just found you guys and wanted to get this post out as we would like to have dd16 placed in the next week.

Participating in your daughter's recovery is highly important.  Most of the RTC's engage in family therapy over the phone weekly/bi weekly and have structured family weekends every quarter where family visits the campus, participates in different therapy models with and apart from their daughters.  Further along in the program there are off campus visits, over night off campus visits and home visits.

Dbt is a desirable therapy model for learning to regulate emotions though the overall therapeutic environment coupled with peer support/accountability are also affective.

You mention your insurance.  Do they cover long term inpatient care? (6 months or more) What criteria does the facility have to meet in order to be covered?  Jahco certified? Who determines when your d is ready to leave the program? "medically necessary"

I understand your desire to move quickly... . this is a huge decision that will take some time and effort to make thoughtfully and with much confidence.

I want to caution you not to rush this decision... . I have had my dd15 at RTC that was approved by my insurance and it really was not a suitable place for her. I find that it is the private pay places that have the best programs. Also I have talked with many places and during that phone call they are all very kind and supportive but please investigate online... . I have found some pretty terrible reviews of some places I was considering. These RTC is big business and because you will have limited contact there is room for abuse.

I think is nice you are trying to include your dd in the decision but please make the best decision YOU think is best. Do you think your dd is capable of making such a huge decision?

I will look for the background on your story... . you say your daughter has not had any acute care? Why are you considering RTC? I guess I need more information to really help. I know right now you might be in crisis and wanting to find something fast... . please take your time... . welcome to the site... . there are many here with the same problem with much advise to share... . it has helped me many times over.

Yes, we are making the final decision.  We are including her in the process, but we will make the final decision. 

We are moving to RTP because it is the recommendation of the Therapist and psychologist.  The Therapist (and we) believe that we should be proactive, not reactive.  That waiting and going through acute, IOP, partial hosp. will prolong the process and RTP in the end, will still be needed.  Also this is taking a toll on our other d11.  In the past 6 months we have lost my Aunt and a 6 and 7 yr old niece and nephew. That, along with her sisters episodes are taking a big toll on her and we have to care for both girls.

Our insurance will cover any length of stay that is pre certified.  So the facility will use an assessment and the notes from previous treatment to determine a stay, then the insurance will decide if they agree and how long they will cover.  The facility would determine when dd16 is ready to leave, but the insurance company may not cover that long.

We have found it very hard to find reviews on the internet.  When there are only one or two reviews, they have to be taken with a grain of salt.  Do you know of a good place to find reviews?

Choosing a few facilities that meet the criteria for insurance and best suited for your d and her needs... . then asking them for a list of references... . have ready questions you want to ask in advance.

I found the responses to be be very honest and parents forthcoming.
