My ex wife after we split was seeing someone. She claimed he had raped her and what she described was horrendous. She refused to go to the police and my rescue formed our recycle. After she dumped me again I became friends with one of her friends. She was horrified about the rape as the details where exactly what had happened to her. Looking back I never saw any marks that you would expect from what she described so it appears she ripped of what happened to her friend.

I have seen this, often the version gets added to as it gets traction and is often one upped on the person they are mirroring.
For example a rape claim does not start off with the deep wounding affect that such an experience would usually result in. The 'deeply wounded' tone of it comes on at the end of the tale being related, and often increases with the retelling.
this is a general topic on mirroring;
How is mirroring different from idealization?
