Anyone here rely on a consulting attorney during your divorce?
If so, how'd it go?
Anyone have strong opinions one way or another?
I see two attorneys this week to interview them to handle the divorce, and I'm kind of, at this point, thinking strongly that a consulting attorney might be beneficial.
Thanks!

Say a little more about this ... .what's a consulting attorney? What are the pros and cons in your decision?

I interviewed a few family law attorneys, with a checklist of questions I had put together after reading Splitting and some other resources, before hiring one. It's up to me how much I make use of him -- I can save some money by doing a lot of my own paperwork, etc.

When I filed in 2009, the attorney did everything. The bill was astronomical on both sides, and then we ended up reconciling. I would prefer an attorney more like the one you mention, where I'm doing my own paperwork.

I'm about to start a different thread about the petition itself.

No worries. Just remember that you're the boss, and find an attorney who is going to advise you (and do work when needed) but will let you take the lead. I tried to use my time wisely -- ask my attorney plenty of questions to get advice and understand what I needed to do at each step. Then I started organizing all my documents and wrote the first draft of the divorce decree and property division. The attorney's role was to check my work and convert it into proper legalese.

Sounds like you had an awesome attorney. And, I have to acknowledge that you seem to be doing pretty well emotionally, based on posts on BPD.

There's a period of adjustment. You'll get there in time.
