I can't remember if I posted this here or not.  I had asked my 14 yo's psychiatrist to help her get pre-authorization from the insurance to get into a RTC, but the psych said no because she had to have a dual diagnosis and she didn't.

First, I have no idea where she got the idea that someone has to have a dual dx to get into an RTC, I know that SOME of them have that requirement, but not all.

We went to see her yesterday and just for kicks I asked her what she had for my daughter's diagnoses.

Major Depressive Disorder

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

ADHD - Inattentive Type

Borderline Personality Disorder

Um, doesn't dual mean 2?  I can see not counting the Inattentive ADHD, but the other THREE?  :headdesk

Oh and if anyone has any leads on an RTC that doesn't require the person to be fully vaccinated, I'd LOVE that info.  Timberline claims they won't take my daughter because she isn't vaccinated.

Thanks!

How incredibly frustrating... .I think dual dX to the medical community means also a substance abuse problem:

I wish they would make that clear when they talk about it then.     It is so very frustrating.

I think it's worth asking all the same. What I don't get is how a substance abuse problem is diagnosed. It could be that the RTCs are geared towards just that. I don't know where that leaves parents and young people like you or your daughter. She's so young. Does she have to develop a SA problem before there is support?

My dd17 went to a RTC and didn't have SA problem but she was in crisis and at the ER. I think that is really the key to getting them into RTC. Insurance companies have to see that you have tried out patient therapy first but if your dd is in the ER every month like my dd then there comes a time when you can't keep them safe at home and a more intensive therapy approach is needed. You will have a very hard time convincing insurance even once they are admitted that they need to stay. Insurance companies are all about the money and they will try to end services way beofre it is time. If you can go independently then take that route.

I thought "dual diagnosis" meant substance abuse PLUS mental illness.

She was in the psych unit here 3 times every 60 days over the summer.  We seem to have broken that cycle, as we are past 90 days since her last stay, but I know we may be living on borrowed time.  We had everything sorted out with an RTC that would take her.  The problem was her psychiatrist wouldn't help with a pre-auth from the insurance company and then I found out that the RTC wouldn't take her anyways because she isn't vaccinated.  Really?  :headdesk

Not all RTCs require a dual diagnosis.  My daughter's psychiatrist is under the false impression that they do.  And your last question is my point exactly!  We do early intervention for toddlers who are having speech problems, why on EARTH wouldn't we do early intervention for teenagers who are diagnosed with BPD to help get them on the right track BEFORE these behaviors are cemented into their brain wiring?
