Marijuana use in BPD

To all those parents who’s child is currently using or has used marijuana in the past , I have just watched an extremely interesting documentary on Marijuana and the pros/cons of legalizing it together with the benefits of medical marijuana. My DD swears by use of Marijana for medical purposes and says it’s the one thing that has helped her greatly . All the prescribed medications she tried actually made her worse .
I have to admit , my feelings about marijuana  are gradually changing especially after watching this documentary. It really challenged me to think about and question what we have been led to believe about Marijuana, and believe me , I’m a straight laced “ strictly no drugs “, never smoked a day in my life kinda gal !
Go watch it . It’s really interesting . And both my husband , older daughter and I are currently of the opinion that my DD is a different girl these last few months and if it’s helping my DD to maintain her current status quo , then so be it ! I’ll accept it !

I haven’t watched the documentary but will. 

You know my DS27 has smoked for the last 12 years that I definitely know of. His usage increased over that time. Just like alcohol your tolerance builds up and you need more for the same feeling. He ended up smoking the strongest skunk he could get. The irony of his grandad smoking Capstan full strength in the 70s and ordering 3 pints at last orders is not unnoticed!

It wasn’t until my DS moved out and was responsible for his much increased living costs did he start to realise something had to change. He just couldn’t afford 4g per day. Thankfully he’s now reduced his smoking by 80 per cent. He's achieved this by buying high grade cbd oil and says it’s been like a miracle. I’ve noticed he seems a lot better physically, he always had such a taut facial expression - he’s relaxed, making good decisions, in control and doing well in work.  At first, when he popped Home to tell me all about it  in the first few days I could only describe it like looking in that beautiful flush of pregnancy - he looked SO WELL!

When he ran out of oil and bought a replacement it was more expensive because it was stronger.  He says it was financial reasons as he needs less. Only time will tell how this pans out.  He’s an addictive nature and it’s something he’s got to find a way to live with.

He wants me to try it. He wants me to try lsd too. No thanks, I’m good!

You know I’m in the uk. My DS has a deep mistrust of pharamaceuticals and of course medical professionals. However, blow me over!, he sought medical treatment recently, opted for a painful procedure and agreed to an std blood test. Unheard of! It came back positive - he made his appt, went and was treated.  Such new and big steps for better self care.

So I mention the cbd oil - there are no thc’s so there’s no “high” only the physical  benefits that he says he’s getting. I know about the whole culture and smoking it to fit in. Seems like the entire world takes something. My DS smokes tobacco roll ups. Does your daughter smoke cigarettes?

I’m glad all your hard work is paying off. You and your family seem much happier.

Not gonna lie, I love mary jane!  It's the only thing that's worked on my low grade depression without side effects. It doubles as female viagra for me.

However, when my pwBPD tokes, I do not like the effect it has on her. She goes all quiet and stone-faced. She seems unable to access her emotions. I had to ask to her not to do it around me as we tending to get into fights when she smoked.

I’ll do an extended reply later but I just wanted to share something else that happened yesterday . Slightly off topic but along similar lines of psych meds .
I am a therapist in a long stay Nursing home / subacute physical rehab unit . One of the long term Residents ( one of my favorites ) has always presented with a developmental delay and she behaves like that of a toddler . She also has a diagnosis of bipolar and amongst heaps of other physical conditions  in her chart . She also presents with the typical physical side effects of long term use of psych meds ... the tardiff dyskinesia, poor co-ordination , motor postures etc etc. Yesterday we finally found out that she had actually been diagnosed with BPD when she was a young adolescent . Her brother told us she was NEVER developmentally delayed and quite to the contrary she was highly intelligent as a teenager . But when diagnosed with BPD she was put through very aggressive psychiatric treatment including electroshock “ therapy “ and on heavy duty psych meds from then on for the rest of her life . And that “ treatment” has been a contributing factor to how she presents today . Like a toddler . With Parkinson’s and a cerebral neurodegenerative disorder that affects her motor skills .
I feel so sad for her and so very sorry that she underwent some apparently horrific experiences while under psychiatric care all those years ago .
Now granted ,this would have been over 50 years ago and psychiatric services have developed a lot since then ,  but still . It’s such a scary thing to dabble in , all those medications . I listened to one psychiatrist who produces videos on a documentary and he said that psych meds are mind altering drugs that can actually be GIVING you a chemical imbalance , so if you didn’t have one BEFORE you went to see a psychiatrist, you’d definitely have one AFTERWARDS . This doctor beloved that a lot of meds were like a chemical labotomy for your brain and he used them only as a very last resort , believing that many of his patients benefit much notebook from talk therapy and through being given hope .

Agreed ! My DD has been on various combinations ( and high doses ) of seroquel, trileptal , lamotrigine , citalopram , Wellbutrin , Abilify and proprano (to help with the side effects of the Abilify ) .

She says not one of these drugs helped . And they are LEGAL drugs . They messed her up far more so than any marijuana  joint has ever done !

This is very true ! At my DD’s worst when abusing substances , she had gone way beyond marijuana. She was using “ Dabs” daily , schrooms , Acid/LSD and also DXM ( stuff found in cough medicines ) to get her “ highs “ . She also put herself in ER after having seizures following an incident with Benadryl where she had been trying to get a “ benzo“ trip .

All these substances , on top of mixing them with her psych meds was a recipe for hell in a hand basket !

I don’t like seeing my DD “ stoned “ so she doesn’t do it in front of me nor does she rub it in my face at all that she’s still taking marijuana. I think she appreciates that I’m doing my best to educate myself on marijuana, and as my thoughts and feelings are challenged about it , I’m less judgemental about her choice to keep using it and I think she finds that validating .

She rarely gets “ stoned” now but I think she is smoking a few puffs at night time, probably every night and it helps  to get her to sleep . She says she sleeps like a log and she wakens up at reasonable times now in the morning.  For a very long time her sleep pattern was way out of whack and she’d literally be up all night . Poor sleep is a recipe for disaster with BPD !

LP I’m so happy that he’s switched to the oil . My DD is a bit of a weed connoisseur! She knows her marijuana! She was telling me about all the different strains and the benefits of different strains eg some are beneficial for relaxation , some are more beneficial for the “high” when feeling low . THC vs the CBD oil , and how it’s important to fully inspect the weed to ensure there aren’t any other things in there like “ Spice “. Of course with Marijuana being completely legal here in Colorado, for both medicinal as well as recreational purposes , we are literally surrounded by dispensaries !
My DD does smoke the occasional cigarette but not very many . At most she would smoke 3 a day . She’s since down to maybe 3 a week “ because cigarettes are so not good for your health Mum “

You MUST watch this documentary LP . It’s a 2 hour documentary and worth every minute . I’ve watched it twice . I am a straight down the line NO dRUGS EVER person , as is my husband . But we are both definitely having our views challenged now having done research . This documentary really has put the cat amongst the pigeons for us in challenging our preconceived beliefs and views on those who use Marijana and the whole industry itself .

Are we being conned by the pharmaceuticals and the  government into believing that marijuana is a dangerous illicit drug that is classed as a schedule 1 stu right up there with cocaine , heroin and meth . It is not in corporations best interests for the truth to actually come out about Marijuana and the benefits of it .

In any case , if marijuana is what’s keeping my girl in the much better place she’s in now and has been for the last few months , then I’ll accept it . I’m starting to think I might actually be missing out myself !:) Lol
