Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness
Author: Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD
Publisher: Trade Paperback (May 1, 1990)
Paperback: 512 pages
ISBN-10: 0345536932
ISBN-13: 9780385303125

Book Description
The title is from a line in Zorba the Greek in which the title character refers to the ups and downs of family life as "the full catastrophe." Kabat-Zinn focuses on "mindfulness," a concept that involves living in the moment, paying attention, and simply "being" rather than "doing." While you can practice anything "mindfully," from taking a walk to cleaning your house, Kabat-Zinn presents several meditation techniques that focus the attention most clearly, whether it's on a simple phrase, your breathing, or various parts of your body.

About the Author
Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, is known for using meditation to help patients deal with illness.

I have recently begun reading Full Catastrophe Living... ., and it started out well enough. Then I reached about the halfway point, which discusses certain issues that strike very close to home and, thus, makes me feel quite sad. Specifically, the sub-chapters regarding the effects of personality traits and social influences on health have really brought me down.

When all is said and done, I will finish the book, which I think is very good. But, admittedly, it's difficult to push myself past the halfway point of it, as I dislike the thoughts/feelings it's evoking.
