I am walking my 21-year-old daughter through filling out her first income tax returns.  I just discovered my uxNPDh usurped my daughter's educational expenses claim (which he did not pay) to lower his taxes and use the money saved to pay off the car he bought for her.

I feel offended for my daughter's sake!  I know I cannot control him, but I am experiencing a knee-jerk reaction to his historically predictable, self-serving behavior!

He also claimed her as a dependent on his returns, though he did not pay half of her support!

Diligence,

Tax time is such a trigger!

This may get more response over on the Legal Board.

My H's exBPDW once claimed one of our SS without permission.

We could not file electronically but we did file on paper and also claimed the SS as we were due.

The IRS followed up and we showed proof that we were entitled and then they went after the exW.

After that year, we decided we were tired of the drama of every year being "BoRderLine Tax TIME (Bomb) !" and BPDexW going nuts---- my DH and I decided to just sign over this SS year by year to shut her up. We have 6 kids together to claim now... .   and so losing 1 meant a difference of like $100. We still claim his child care expenses even though we don't claim him as a dependent.

Anyway, in your case, I think you need to work this out with your exH and your DD so that it doesn't happen again or... .   file on paper as you would and let him explain to the IRS what he did. He will explode but then again, I don't know how much money we are talking about. An accountant could help you guys figure out if it is worth it to fight and how to do it.

Yours,

mamachelle

Dear mamachelle,

Thanks for your input.  I do not think it will happen again.  My daughter indicated that she is unwilling to allow him to take advantage of her in this particular manner again.

I appreciate your story.  Personality disorder behavior is irrational!  I want to be impervious to it, but sometimes I hop aboard the emotional crazy-train with my uxNPDh or my uBPD parents.  Then I suffer.

Warm regards!
