Would appreciate some insight/advice

My girlfriend recently left me. I would like to work on things with her, but I have developed some anxiety about the thought that she may be back sooner rather than later. She sent me a message this morning saying she has told everyone that she doesn't know what to do with her life. Then I get another message asking me to let her know how a doc appt goes today and saying "I love and miss you!" Her behavior during the relationship was stressful enough, but her sudden departure and behavior afterwards leave me at a loss of what to do.

She asked for space after she left, and I am giving it to her. I do not understand, however, why she's still contacting me with such messages if she wants space from me. I've wondered if she regrets leaving and is seeking my approval for what she did. I've also wondered if she's trying to convince herself she did the right thing leaving by continually telling me that she wants to be single for awhile even though I've dropped the subject of couple's counseling for the time being.

I'm trying to focus on getting myself back on track and I worry that she'll be back before I'm strong enough to handle the situation. I am totally at a loss of how to feel or what to do. Any insight into the situation would be MUCH appreciated!
