Double Whammy

My mother was diagnosed w/ BPD/BP2 in her 70s and died a few yrs ago.  "Jeesh" is all I can say.  My husband and I adopted a 3yo boy while we lived in S. Korea to find that he was incredibly violent.  We have lived on eggshells for yrs w/ this beautiful, high-functioning, honor-role, star club soccer-goalie for 9 yrs, treating for RAD.  :)ue to increasing violence since puberty and safety of us and our 9yo dtr adopted from China, he is currently admitted to adolescent psych.  He now tests pos for BPD, and we are looking for residential treatment centers to transfer him to.  "Jeesh" is all I can say.

Our objective is to better understand the struggles our child faces and to learn the skills to improve our relationship and provide a supportive environment and also improve on our own emotional responses, attitudes and effectiveness as a family leaders

I'm with you "Jeesh"!  It sounds like you have a lot on your plate.  But you have come to the right place  .  We have other members that are parents of children with BPD you are not alone. 

You will find knowledge, support, and caring from the members on this site we all have someone with BPD in our lives and know how difficult it can be.  Please feel free to check out the website if you're like I was when I first arrived here you will be surprised and relieved by the number of stories that resonate with you. 

I'd like to suggest that you visit the [L5] Parenting a Son or Daughter Suffering from BPD Board there you will find others in a similar situation with their children.  Please feel free to post your questions, ask for advice, and share your own experiences.

It's been a journey!  While son was admitted he had neuropsych testing results consistent w left brain injury like shaken baby syndrome, not unlikely in Korea. We were "happy"?  Turns out he's been compensating for years with a severe learning disability but it was not seen bc he's a straight-A student.  So now he's in twice weekly objects relations therapy which is even better for him than DBT or EMDR.  It's uphill, but this therapist is giving us the tools to think positively abt the future. Thanks for asking abt us. That's super considerate.

Bless his heart!  He must have been very confused and angry.

So good to hear you have a positive action in place and are seeing some hope.

What kind of positive results are you getting thus far?  Or is it too early?

Coping with this sort of thing as a parent takes skills.  Lots of them! 

What are you doing to take care of yourself while providing for your special needs child?
