Hi bunny1

Welcome to the Parenting Board!  We are happy to have you here with us.

When you are able, can you tell us more about your family and what struggles you are all having?

We can offer the information you seek through the Tools, Lessons, personal experience sharing and support.

I look forward to learning more about you and your family and how I can help.

Hi Bunny1,

Welcome to bpdfamily! It can feel a bit strange to post at first, so I'm glad you took the first step. How old is your BPD child? How are you holding up?

I hope you'll let us know when you're ready. This is a safe environment and people understand what you're going through.

Okay I think I figured this out.

My son is 22 years old. He is the oldest of my three boys.   He has had a substance abuse for over two years.  We finally made the decision he needed to go and seek in-treatment rehab.   He's been away for 30 days now.   During treatment is when they diagnosed him with BPD.  It's been very overwhelming because we thought the substance abuse was hard enough but now this.  I am reading a lot so I can become educated on this.  My fear is how my other boys and husband are going to react to new ways of life with this.

Hi bunny1,

Thanks for the info.  Do all your boys live at home with you and your husband?

You are right in that BPD will and does affect everyone in the family, just like having an addict in the family affects everyone.

Sometimes... .well... .usually our lives improve when we work on improving... .change and the unknown are what we usually fear.

There are new ways to communicate and understand that can be learned.  How much each person in the family invests in learning about BPD, how to communicate, and how to support will be each individuals' choice.  The irony in this is that the communication skills you learn here to use with your s22 will also work with your other family members.

Does this make sense?

Under the Tools section on the right of the page are basic communication skills like validation and SET.  These are good ones to learn and practice on your family until your son is released... .or is he already out?

Will he come back to your home upon release?  What's the plan after that?
