My 20 yr old son was diagnosed almost 2 months ago with BPD and is doing weekly individual DBT therapy.  We can not find DBT group therapy anywhere in our city of Louisville KY.  Can someone please let me know if this exists?  The Brook Hospital advertises that they have these group therapies, but his therapist called to talk to them about it and relayed to me that it's not "true" DBT therapy they are conducting. I am very worried that the individual therapy is not going to be enough.  Because of the lack of group DBT his therapist recommends he see another therapist in their practice once a week also.  So 2 individual sessions per week is what he will start next week.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello sanders70,

Welcome to the Parents Board, we are happy to have you here with us. I'm sorry to hear that your son20 has been diagnosed with BPD. Finding a true DBT program is very difficult in most regions of the country.  DBT has the highest success rate for BPD when measured by decreasing suicidal ideation/attempts and self injury.

Does your son engage in these?

I found only one resource in your area:

Commonwealth Therapy Group

2365 Harrodsburg Rd.

Suite B225

Lexington, KY 40504

United States

Phone: (859) 276-0700

Fax: (859) 276-0707

Email: martha.wetter@ctgrp.org

Website: www.ctgrp.org

Program(s): Outpatient

Population(s): Adult

Have you had experience with this provider?  If there is a University near you perhaps checking with them could be an option.

I think as a very young adult your son could benefit from the group experience.  At this stage peers still have a very strong influence in their lives.

The other option you mention... .a second therapist... would this be CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy)?

How are you coping sanders70?  Are you able to take care of yourself as you search for ways to help your son?
