Hi there. My 19 year old daughter I believe had BPD. From the moment our girl started nursery at 4 (we are Welsh) our girl reacted differently to the world. It's been really tough the last 10 years trying to figure out "what's wrong" but a year ago when she was 18 she split from us for the first time. We were left devistated, confused and traumatised. In that 6 long weeks I started looking for answers and I found them at bpdfamily ( thank God ) I started learning about her pain, the pain that caused her to inflict pain on us. She came back briefly and we helped her get her own home. It fell apart 3 months later. She came back briefly but split again when I put my first boundary in place. That was 2 months ago. She has been in touch and is I believe in crisis. She has had 1 counselling session but will not take any medication. I am trying to persuade her to let me take her to the doctors. Any advice on what to say to the doctor please. Thank you

Hi L31gh,
Welcome to bpdfamily
I'm sorry your daughter is in pain and going through a crisis, and glad, too, that she is staying in touch. That must give you some comfort at a time when it probably feels there isn't much. What are the behaviors that have put her in crisis? It sounds like she was at least willing to see a counselor once, and that is a good sign. What have you said to your daughter about going to see a doctor? Would you feel comfortable sharing with us what behaviors concern you most?
Do you have other family members who are involved? Are there other siblings that your daughter talks to?
I'm glad you found the site, and hope to learn more about how you're doing.

Hi L31gh,
Welcome to the site and the Parenting Board, I'm glad you are here looking for information and advice.
Might I ask what kind of a doctor you are wanting to take your daughter to see/speak with? Psychiatrist or General Practitioner?
A psychiatrist (pdoc) should be able to get a better picture of your daughter's condition through a description of her behaviors. A personal interview with your daughter will reveal her belief systems and the combination of the two can prompt either a diagnoses or an order for more definitive testing.
What kind of medications have been prescribed for your daughter in the past? Depression and anxiety often accompany BPD and many people take medications to level these out. Are these the types of medications she has been prescribed?
I look forward to hearing back from you and helping where I can.
