Family Physician terminating services to our daughter?

We received a letter today addressed to our daughter. It is from the clinic we have used for over 20 years. She had her own GP there after she turned 18. The letter informs us they are terminating any further services to her in the Family Medicine department. It is unsigned but included a release of information for her to sign so they could release information to her "new" doctor which she must find in the nest 30 days.

Why are we reading it? Well, it came to our home address. BPD daughter is currently in an Eating Disorder treatment facility that also treats ED with BPD. She will return here upon completion of that program. We expect she will be expected to have a regular doctor to help monitor her progress.

So, if I understand this, a doctor can simply refuse to treat a mentally ill patient and just terminate services at anytime?

Our objective is to better understand the struggles our child faces and to learn the skills to improve our relationship and provide a supportive environment and also improve on our own emotional responses, attitudes and effectiveness as a family leaders

Wow... .what a horrible thing to happen! I really have no experience with something like this (maybe some other parent on this Board will have some, though, and offer you advice and insights). All I can say is that if it were me, I would call the clinic, ask for her prior team/Dr., and ask if there is any advice they can give you as to what to do next. It sounds like you know them fairly well; is there anyone there you can talk to that you trust?

How old is your daughter? I'm glad she's getting help in a program for her Eating Disorder and BPD; maybe there's a chance that the people treating her there can give you some advice?

When my son went to a 21-day Intensive In-Patient Dual Diagnosis Program (for a drug addiction and mental health issues--this was the place that diagnosed his BPD), he was discharged with paperwork that delineated what he needed to do and what types of Doctors he needed to see, in order to complete his recovery process. Maybe they will have similar information for you regarding your daughter?

My son had been seeing an Out-Patient Therapist for his drug issues & a Psychiatrist for his ADD/Clinical Depression/Suicidal Ideations for many months prior to being admitted to the Dual Diagnosis Program. After his discharge from there it was suggested to him to continue doing all of that, with other advice: lists of books to read, and workbooks to complete, and DBT and mindfulness paperwork (and tips) that they provided for him, for the BPD. They were VERY helpful and caring about his recovery... .

I believe that there are care-givers who will be happy to give you names of other Drs. and Therapists for your daughter, and they are most likely the ones who know her from the past, and now from the program she is in at this time. I'm big on asking questions and making people "in the know" help me when my son needs something for his well-being
