I thought someone here mentioned a website where you can ask legal questions, does anyone remember the site. Also, did you use it and was it helpful?

I've heard members mention avvo.com, and there's also expertlaw.com. Try a google search for "free legal advice forum" to see what else is out there. Hope this helps.

Avvo.com is the one I hear mentioned here. I think it's usefulness depends on what problem you're trying to solve.

If you don't have a lawyer already, it might be better to pony up the $100-$300 to get a consultation. You can pack a lot of questions into 30-60 minutes.

My brief impression of avvo is that local lawyers will give you just enough info to try to get you to retain them. After rejecting the one consult provided through my program at work, I chose to pay for a consult with the one on avvo who gave the best answer, and I retained him.

I use avvo a lot. I say I'm in a different town than I am (want to be anonymous) and I change a few slight details. I also try not to get so specific that the lawyers are afraid to answer less they replace a real attorney. They often do give good answers if you ask the questions correctly. Some just say "retain an attorney" but it all depends on how you ask. You can mark a certain answr as 'best' and some of them like to get 'best answer' a few times, so they have an incentive to answer. Avvo tries to get you to pay for a consult, but you can ask for free as much as you want - I use diffrerent login names. I wouldn't ask about real specific things, but sometimes matters of procedure and things like that. It's different county by county and state by state so just use it for some perspective. And yes you may get a good referral. They are not supposed to ask for you to retain them, but you can take that initiative.
