Hi, I haven't logged on here in a while. Just wanted to give you all an update. After a horribly rocky couple of years, DD, 17 is doing well right now. We moved to a different state and she started college, and is even living on campus in the freshman dorms.  So far, she seems to be doing great. She's made a nice group of friends, they seem much more stable and positive than her high school friends, hopefully that will help her stay on track.  I'm almost afraid to post this as we never know what's around the corner, but believe me, we didn't think this was possible a year ago. So hang in there everyone, and thanks for caring and being supportive and for helping me realize that I'm not alone in dealing with these challenges!

This is a great post. Just wondering if your daughter has a roommate? My dd is 16 and is always annoyed by what others do and is extremely inconsiderate, I cannot ever imagine her living with others. Thanks again for sharing and for keeping hope alive.

Many parents fear that uprooting our BPD kids and giving them a complete change of environment/peer group will do more harm than good... .a real  possibility.

Do you think that the fresh start set her up for her current success?

She does have a roommate and they are actually getting along well so far. I think she is more motivated to make a good impression with her new college dorm mates than with us at home, which probably helps. We're all keeping our fingers crossed that as the novelty wears off, things will continue to go well. It's difficult to assume that's the case, but so far so good, and we'll take it!

I definitely think she needed a change from her previous peer group. It was much easier to get her on board with the move to start college than it would have been to move to another state and finish up at a new high school. It was at the point though with the harmful, risky behavior with existing high school friends that we didn't think staying made sense anymore.  It's a tough call, and I think to some extent you're dammed if you stay and damned if you go. My husband and I agonized over the decision.

For her, the fresh start seems to be giving her a chance to start over on a healthy, more positive path. We can only hope it continues that way. It's a start and we'll take it! I'll try to keep you all posted, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all of you!
