Need help finding residental treatment specifically for BPD

I have an almost 19 year old daughter with severe BPD. She's been in multiple IOP programs, partial hospitalization programs and inpatient acute psych many times.

She just completed 75 days at a court ordered residential treatment center that is addiction recovery based and not focused on BPD. She did well there and was discharged on Tuesday to a group home with supervision. She violated the rules in less than 48 hours and was court ordered back into the same treatment center for 30 more days.

She had a plan to run and never come back. She's very impulsive and explosive. It's a scary situation as she has some dangerous "friends" who use drugs and this became her main focus once she was released. When she was caught and asked to leave the group home she was going to kill herself. If the court had not stepped in I believe she would have tried to commit suicide. She's attempted twice before and was almost successful once. When she's overwhelmed she goes to extremes.

After much discussion with family it was decided that if we can find a residential treatment center focused treating BPD we will find a way to pay for it.

We live in Ohio. I'd like to find something within driving distance, a few hundred miles, and not out west or too far away. However at this point, because I do believe this is a life or death situation for her, I am willing to look at anything.

I looked at McLean Gunderson and that's not possible as it costs $81,000 for the minimum stay of 60 days and it's 21 and older. Let me just say I found the cost shocking and this should be illegal.

We do have private health insurance with a residential benefit but I know how hard it is to get insurance to pay for residential treatment. I did have her on a waiting list for Nova Behavioral Health in Dayton (3 hours away) and insurance agreed to pay for a week at a time based on progress. However she was rapidly spiraling out of control while in IOP and before a bed became available she violated probation and was court ordered into treatment.

We are always in crisis or at a near crisis moment with her. It's clear she can not handle her life and needs residential treatment for BPD. She's done DBT in an outpatient setting multiple times and just fakes it. I know there is no guarantee she will be able to get help in a place that specializes in treating BPD but I have to try. 

I have exhausted my resources here with the state, county, case managers, doctors, therapists, our local mental health board and anyone who I think may know of a place.

So my question to the group is this. Does anyone know of a BPD RTC and has had success with it for their child?

I really do believe if I don't get her some appropriate help she will not be with us for long.

Our objective is to better understand the struggles our child faces and to learn the skills to improve our relationship and provide a supportive environment and also improve on our own emotional responses, attitudes and effectiveness as a family leaders

Sounds you you have all been going through a very rough time. You must be exhausted and eager to find your DD some more structured support.

I just replied to another similar posting, looking for a RTC for BPD. There are some, and as you have discovered, they are prohibitive! We ended up sending our 18yr DD to a wilderness program - focus was on mood regulation, personal responsibility, accountability and self awareness. It was the best decision. Most of the young adults there, like our daughter, had attended many facilities but their defiance and impulsiveness ways always won over and so their self destructive cycle continued... .until they went to wilderness.  My DD said the experienced saved her life, and it radically changed the life of most of her peers - a huge success rate.

Hi Slwinner!

Im so sorry your going through this.  It can be draining!  My 16 yo BPDs went to San Marcos Treatment facility for 6 months.  It helped tremendously, but we still struggle.  I feel that if it had been a BPD focus center he wouldve made a little more progress.  I had originally considered a wilderness program, but some of them wanted to wean off of meds.  my s spirals out of control without meds.  For anyone reading this... .we have military insurance which covered the treatment facility for 6 months at $1200 per day.  We are very fortunate.  I have also heard that there is a facility that helps with the costs based on need.  Maybe somewhere between Houston and Dallas?
