Before you can make things better, you have to stop making them worse... Have you considered that being critical, judgmental, or invalidating toward the other parent, no matter what she or he just did will only make matters worse? Someone has to be do something. This means finding the motivation to stop making things worse, learning how to interrupt your own negative responses, body language, facial expressions, voice tone, and learning how to inhibit your urges to do things that you later realize are contributing to the tensions.

My husband keeps bringing up these girls in their 20s at work and how they are manipulating each other. (One of them supposedly tried to get him fired to get his shift.) He seems unable to keep from telling me these stories. It's gossip, for sure. The other day he mentioned that a doctor asked him why he doesn't run after the women at work. He told him that he feared God, that's why. He works at a hospital.

I wouldn't overthink this.

I would see this as a chance to validate something and then move along.

Perhaps even a time to ask him questions about something you would like to talk to him about.

What kind of response do you normally give him when he says these things?
