True or False?
«
on:
March 28, 2019, 01:12:41 AM »
Hello Family!
Spring is in the air and I'm feeling playful. Let's play a game of True or False!
Here's how it will go. Someone posts a statement such as,
The person below me knows how to drive a stick shift.
The next person replies with "True" or "False" and, if desired, includes a little something about why it's True or False. This is followed by another statement.
True. My first car was a 4-speed Datsun B210 and I loved driving it. I felt like a race car driver! Since then, I've only had cars with manual transmissions. They're not easy to find anymore!
The person below me loves watching baseball on TV.
The next person should feel free to comment on posts above before getting into the game. Like so:
I LOVED driving a manual transmission! I had to rent a car once, automatic transmission, and it took me a day or two to stop moving my left foot over looking for the clutch pedal!
Excerpt
The person below me loves watching baseball on TV.
False. What a boring game to watch! I could take a shower, come back 2 innings later, and not have missed anything. I prefer watching ice hockey, never a dull moment!
The person below me has beautiful handwriting.
And so on...
I'll get us started:
The person below me once owned a black and white television.

False
The first TV I owned was a hand me down from an aunt when I got my first apartment after college. When my husband and I got married, he had a small portable black and white tv that I "inherited" through marriage. I think we still have it, it is somewhere in the basement - I wonder if it still works?

Awesome - we're on our way! Thanks for playing everyone!
For the record, I love watching baseball on TV but have heard the "what a boring game!" from others. I bought a black and white TV in 1980 with money I earned working in the church nursery. One of the first things I stumbled upon is Tom Petty's video for Refugee and I fell in adolescent love with him on the spot. That love affair carried me through some difficult times throughout my life. I never had my own paper route either but once took over a route for a neighbor who took a week-long vacation. I knew it wasn't for me the first day. Sesame Street, Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, Electric Company, ZOOM - great shows!

I did have a paper route...I inherited it from the kid next door. I delivered the papers everyday after school and early on Saturday mornings on my bike. I had a wagon that I pulled around the neighborhood with the Sunday morning paper in. Once I was old enough to get a "real" job I gave the route to my brother, then he gave it to my sister.
I think I was just a little too old for Sesame Street when it first came on TV. I remember my younger sister watching it. But Zoom I loved! 0.2.1.3.4...send it to zoom!
I don't have much of a sweet tooth, except chocolate...love chocolate...

FALSE...I used to be. However since I now have to get up at 5:30 each morning to give my DD her medication, my night owl days are over. 11 is about as late as I can keep my eyes open.

Can I play? It's not my "home board", but this is fun!
I can't drive a stick (tried once, can go forward but not reverse). I do not like any sports whatsoever (unless my kids are on the team). I have owned a black and white portable TV. I never had a paper route; we lived in the country. I did grow up watching sesame Street (I remember electric company, too, barely). I am not big on sweets, but I like them occasionally (I love chess pie). I used to be a night owl, but having kids changed that. And...

True! There were camel rides at the fair when I was little, and I got to ride one. It was fun!

I am cracking up that you remember the zip code to ZOOM! I loved that show and was incredibly pleased with myself when I learned how to do the arm thing Bernadette did; it seemed so fancy and complicated!
https://youtu.be/I3AzdiWHEuc
(Bernadette's arm thing is at :37)
edited to add: I love that your paper route was passed down to your siblings.
I am Redeemed,
I had to look up Chess Pie and I still have no idea what it would taste like - butter, sugar, vanilla, eggs, cornmeal, evaporated milk and distilled white vinegar. Sounds sweet and that's enough for me to make one soon!
The person below me had a rotary phone in their home growing up
TRUE!
We had one stuck to the wall and later on, a more portable version. I remember as an adolescent, I'd get in trouble and be on phone restriction. I'd try to sneak but those darn rotary phones were loud when you dialed 'em. So I would try to dial really slowly but (!) that would register as another phone number entirely!
I also remember trying to win radio contests by being the XX caller and thinking to myself..."I'll never win, someone with a push-button phone is going to win because it's taking me so long to dial this darn number!" It didn't stop me from trying but I never did win.
Speaking of phones, does anyone else remember dialing POP-CORN to get the current time? I tried it the other day and got a teeny bit sad that it doesn't work anymore. I would set my digital watch to the EXACT time using POP-CORN - silly!
The person below me won something in a radio contest.

I could use a distraction from the drama in my house tonight, so I thought I would play again.
I have never ridden a Camel - or even a horse for that matter!
We did have a rotary phone - it was on the wall in the kitchen, and it had a very long cord. I remember as a teen stretching that cord as far as it would go so I could have "private" conversations with my friends.
OH
- OMG that arm thing...I too was very excited when I learned how to do that. Thanks so much for posting that video.

OH
chess pie is so sweet and good! It's a staple in the South, especially for holidays, along with pecan pie and sweet potato pie. Sometimes we get fancy with it and make chocolate chess pie! Yummy.
I had a rotary phone growing up, complete with long, tangled cord. I didn't get a push button phone until I was ten years old. My grandma still had hers well into the 1990's.
I never won anything in a radio contest, but I did win a drawing for kids on a local TV station once. I got an art set with templates that you shaded to draw monsters, and then you colored them. They thought I was a boy, because my first name is not a traditional female name. They offered me a girl toy when they found out, but I wanted the monster art set .
I am not a letterboxer, and I didn't even know what it was. Now that I know, it sounds super cool. I may start that as a new hobby.

That's why I'm here right now, SOD! I'm so grateful for everything I've learned here at bpdfamily, the tools, the support and all you fine folks - sometimes I need a break from anything BPD, though, and I'm glad you brought this thread back up =)
Letterboxing sounds so cool! I'll hafta check to see if it's something we do here in the states. My DD25, her BF, and GS4 have gotten into the #kindnessrocks movement and have placed dozens of cool painted rocks throughout our city. I like the idea of the placed item staying put for others to discover and log.
IAR
I also remember stretching the long curly cord to its absolute limit to get some privacy. Ours was by the slider that led to the deck in the back
yard so I'd go out and shut the door for maximum secrecy
Speaking of TV show contests, I always wanted to play POW! to win a Happy Meal!
Excerpt
the person below me knows how to juggle
True!
I taught myself to juggle when I was about 22. I never got past juggling three small items and couldn't keep it going very long because, for some reason when I juggle, the items keep getting away from me and I have to walk forward to keep up.

Letterboxing is said to have started over in England in the 1800's but is definitely here in the States (we live in New England)... We did it a lot when our kids were little. It is like a treasure hunt. A great website to learn about it is atlasquest.com
I have never been able to juggle...my brother learned when we were kids, but I was never coordinated enough.

World's biggest pysanka:
False
. I had no idea, had to look it up.
BTW, I learned to drive in a '78 Datsun B-210 when I was 12. Parentified, my mom had me drive her 60 miles at night on dark mountain roads to that valley and her nursing job in Sacramento while she slept. I later blew the engine in her Ford Fiesta when I took it up to 90 mph (stupid Ford, needed a rev limiter). I never told her.

okay, funny story...
i like the
idea
of roller coasters. i play a lot of the game "roller coaster tycoon". i love theme parks. i follow some theme park review sites on social media.
i was scared of them when i was younger as i guess a lot of us are. i got over that when a group i was in took a trip and the first thing we did was ride the texas giant at six flags, followed by some others.
couple of years ago, my friend and i took a trip to missouri to scope out some haunted houses, and because they had a six flags.
before we went to the six flags, we got into some whiskey. yall, maybe this should be obvious, but let me tell you that alcohol and roller coasters do not mix. after a couple of them, i got sick, and only got sicker. we left, after spending a good 50-60 bucks to get in and only riding a few rides, and then i made quite a mess in the car and was miserable the rest of the night.
incidentally, i think i have determined that no, i dont really like roller coasters. i dont hate them. but i really dont like the feeling of "losing my stomach" going down a ridiculously steep hill, its just not a pleasant feeling at all, nor do i like being jerked around like crazy. i cant get into it, i just find myself holding on and waiting for it to be over.

OH
, I think it is awesome that you can juggle. I tried to learn, but I just couldn't get it right.
I have performed on a stage, though. Competition dance team, piano recitals, and various plays and musicals with drama club and community theater.
Turkish
, I didn't know what pysanka was, either. Now I think it's cool, and I would like to decorate some. I don't know how you hollow out the egg, though (the Martha Stewart website suggested that, but didn't say how you do it )
OR
, I am with you on the"idea" of roller coasters. I've actually ridden some that were really fun. There was a small window between me being too afraid as a kid and me being too old and not handling it well. I think I have passed the window, whiskey not withstanding.
I have never been outside my home country, but I would like to travel. I always wanted to go to the UK. My ancestors are Irish and Welsh, and I would like to see where they came from.

What fun! Stumbled on this tonight...
So...
-- My dad had me on a rudimentary developed I-95 Florida learning to drive at age 13...his instructions were " keep it straight and keep it under 75. " Shortly after that, I learned to drive a stick-shift...most fun was the 1976 Triumph Spitfire I drove while living in England ...bought it with American specs -- really hard to drive on the left side and try to pass!
Tom Petty...I sent to University of Florida in Gainesville and remember Tom Petty from his first band, Mudcrutch -- local bar band, good to get out of the bar before midnight when the fights started.
Performed on stage? I started college as a classical voice major. Didn't last, but yes...lots of stage work.
No, I haven't been sky diving but would love to. My husband got his paratrooper training at Ft. Henning -- said it is terrifying yet exhilirating.
What is my question?
I have been to the other side of the world, and couldn't speak the language.

- you do not need to hollow out the egg. Just leave it and the inside will dry out. It does not smell - and will not as long as it doesn't crack. It is much easier to work on an egg that is not hollowed out.
OR
- not a rollercoaster fan. However I did ride all the rollercoasters at Disney World the year we went. Hated the one in Animal Kingdom, and was not to thrilled with the rock n' roll coaster that went upside down - but I did it. Cat Woman's whip at six flags new england is more my speed.
I have been out of my home country- we went to England on our honeymoon, and we went to Russia to adopt our DS.
I have never been skydiving - and never ever will.

I had no idea an egg would dry out if just left (and not cracked)! Do the insides just completely disappear or will there be a little ball of "insides" rolling around in there? ::
Gagrl
, how cool that you saw Mudcrutch back in the day. I'm not a fan of their new stuff but think it's cool they resurrected the band. Mike Campbell is so very talented.
I've performed on a stage. I was part of a very small Improv group and it was really fun - I was funny! Our group did short-form improv; games like you see on Whose Line is it Anyway? My son, 28, eventually became part of the group. After he joined, instead of people coming up to me to tell me "You're so funny!" they would come up to me and tell me "Your son is so funny!" He was!
I also sing karaoke and in my head I sound like a rock star!

False. I can play Swanee River on the keyboard and that's about it. I took piano lessons for a time when I was a kid but never kept it up; I wish I had. A few years ago I bought a Yamaha keyboard and a lifetime subscription to Playground Sessions. Co-created by Quincy Jones, it's like playing Rock Band. The keyboard hooks up to the computer and you play along with the lighted keys on the screen. The keyboard is gathering dust in the craft room
