Feeling so sad.  My 26 year old son who is my greatest joy, was just told by a DBT psychologist that he has BPD.  He is just beginning therapy with this new therapist, and of course it takes about 6-8 months to go through Linehan's program properly.
I just want to know that he'll be okay.

Hi and welcome to the board.  You are in the right place to talk with others who share similar experiences so I hope you settle in and read and jump into other threads.  We all work together to support and even challenge each other here.

Can you tell us more about your son?  How did he get into DBT to begin with?  What would you say your greatest challenge is in terms of coping with the situation?

Sorry to hit you with questions up front.  Answer what you can or want to.

I hope to hear more from you soon.  And yes, things can get better.  We see it a lot here.

Thanks for the response.  Do we ever know for certain the reasons someone has BPD?  With my son it appears as though his is mild, according to two psychologists.  He was bullied a lot as a child and adolescent.  He has Tourette's Syndrome, although he's grown out of most of it over the past 6 years.  It was worst when he was an adolescent.  Also, he's a highly intelligent, gentle, creative soul, and not a "rough and tumble" guy.  That set him apart, too.  He also has OCD, which is manifested as intrusive thoughts (not compulsions), and so he perseverates about  his relationships with women, and that turns a lot of people off.  He does hold down a very responsible job, which he's had for more than 2 years, since graduating from college.

Hello Mamapajama
I too welcome you to the group. I hope you have had time to look around and see some of the articles and videos on this site. The more you know about BPD the better able you will be to provide good support for your son. I see a lot of reason for hope for him. People with BPD often improve. It is very treatable with modalities such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. One of the best predictors of success is having support which he clearly does. So you have lots of reason to hope. What are your most urgent questions at this point? We are all here to help.
