Hi it’s looking like the comprehensive 24 week DBT won’t work out for us. It’s 8 hours travel weekly and after trying a few weeks in a row my 18 yo daughter is exhausted and just not able to commit to it.
The other thing is my daughter had given up all hope of living and getting better long before we heard of DBT. That’s what happens when you go years without a proper diagnosis.
Has anyone seen a loved one benefit from doing just CBT and also there is a psychologist in our town who can teachSBT skills but it’s not the comprehensive program with group; I’m looking into that.
I just have been made to feel like the only way to help my daughter is the 24 week program but the reality of our life is that this is just not an option at this time.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Louski  Virtual hug (click to insert in post)

I can understand your DD being exhausted by that journey, generally exhausted. My DD (26 at the time, 2015-2016) was very ill and spent most time in bed which I accepted, leaving all she had to do was 2 hours DBT each week and practicing her skills, for 12 months.

Knowing what I know now, if without local DBT I would find a very experienced DBT Practice working online that can cover both the skills work (one hour) and the therapy (one hour). Yes it is not in group work and it is online, resourceful practices have moved online. Fundamental to DBT is therapists are part of a DBT practice to gain the much needed support and supervision for success.

I'm in the UK Louski.  Wondering what your current practice recommends, have you spoken with them?

Hi Louski!

I tried to send you personal message, several times. Did they come through? Pleas let me know if not! I will try again :-)

Wendydarling

At this time my daughter said she wants to continue so I just have to be strong and weather the storms when she is dysregulated and feeling overwhelmed about the commitment. Her ups and downs really have me feeling like a rag doll:( I am trying to focus on self care again as that went by the wayside during Covid and all the unexpected changes that came with it. Thank you for the advice about online skills. Depending on what happens I may be pursuing this!
