Hi this is  probably a long shot. I live in Sydney Australia,  is there anyone out there who knows a psychologist in Sydney Australia who counsels children of BPD parents? Southern Sydney would be preferable.  My granddaughter is in need of learning coping mechanisms.

Wish I could help!

Maybe you can find one by "networking" - start with your family doctor or any other professional, and get a reference to someone, and then if that's not the right person, keep asking for references until you find someone who fits.

Do they have a counselor at the school? Perhaps they can recommend someone? Alternately an experienced family domestic violence counselor can teach effective strategies too.

In Melbourne, Victoria, the doctor can apply for 6-12 Medicare funded psychologist sessions and it will get you started.

I just Googled "BPD family counselling nsw" and quite a few specialists come up.

Good luck

Hi don't know about SYD

In Victoria their is  www.spectrumBPD.com.au/ that provides support to people with BPD and also had a really useful list of psycologists with experience.  They might be able to point you in the direction of a NSW provider.

Also look for therapists that are trained in dialectical behavior therapy -- these therapists will be very familiar with BPD, and the skills they teach are helpful for children of BPD.

It's good to get her into therapy at this age. My son got into therapy when he was 9, and he made really good progress (we also moved out of the house, and that helped). But there was a bit of a setback as he turned 12. The pre-adolescent years can be extra tough for kids who have BPD parents because their emotional coping skills get tested by peers. They tend to be kids that either stuff their feelings or are flooded by them, and that doesn't go over so well at this age, making it hard for them to form and keep friendships.

Hope you find a good therapist. It can really make a huge difference.
