Signposts on the Road to Recovery

I laughed out loud yesterday.
There was no one around but me.
I wasn’t watching or listening to anything.
The house was silent.
I wasn’t watching Sophie roll around wagging her tail and smiling,
Which she does with such reckless abandon
Or remembering fondly a moment shared with my lost love.
I wasn’t laughing at myself or at my situation,
Or at the ludicrousness of some uncaring world or the people in it.
I wasn’t forcing myself to laugh to stave off hopelessness or aloneness
I just had a funny thought and it made me laugh.
That hasn’t happened in over a year.
And it made me stop and reflect.
I still have a long way to go
To recover from heartache and trauma
But I am
Slowly
Coming back
To myself.
