Is being extremely late to events a "thing" or was my mother just special? She was always late, even to weddings and holiday dinners - often by more than an hour.

Extremely late... .ALWAYS late (not exaggerating, I cannot remember a single time when he was on time)... .and unwilling to answer the phone to give me updates, i.e. will be out in ten minutes.
When I would object he would suggest the problem was my impatience, my inability to entertain myself and find something to do, my inability to relax and hang out, my problem and my fault. I sat outside in the hot car so much at one point I got a heat rash on my arm!
We set it up so that if I had to wait more than ten minutes (because it was often like 45 min) that I would leave before I got mad. Then when I actually did that, he was furious too.
I am not sure if I can post on this board b/c my relationship wasn't family but your post resonated BIG time. This was such an issue. Glad to know I am not alone and to affirm it wasn't just about my impatience!

Well said, Z.
And Reclaiming? I HEAR YOU! It was always *my* impatience that was the problem. Not that the entire family was holding up dinner because she was doing God-knows-what. It was so embarrassing to always be asked why she was so late.
