I've been reading the boards and it seems my ex's BPD was extreme... .do you think it was due to his 30 years of steroid use?  Or are there different levels of BPD?

There are different levels of BPD but I would hate to think of it added to steroids use.

I take it you mean anabolic steroids?

Psychological effects

Misusing anabolic steroids can also cause the following psychological or emotional effects:

•aggressive behaviour

•mood swings

•manic behaviour

•hallucinations and delusions

Was he definitely BPD or could it have been the effects of 30 years of steroids?

Being a heterosexual male, I have to say no... .but my understanding of anabolic steroid abuse (and I think 30 years use qualifies as abuse) is that they turn you into a monster, both physically and mentally. It may not have been BPD... .and I shudder what to think if he in fact had both.
