Welcome Janemurray:

I'm sorry you are having a problem with your sister and with depression.   Does your sister have BPD?

Do both you and your sister live with your parents?  In what ways does your sister control your life?

You can set some BOUNDARIES with your sister.  Boundaries are for your benefit and protection.  They are up to you to set and enforce.  Click on the green link in this paragraph and read about boundaries.  What are some boundaries you might want to set in regard to your sister's behavior?

You can't change your sister, but by learning some specific communication skills, you can make things better for you.  If you look inside the large green band at the top of this page, there is a "Tools" menu with some links to lessons.  You might want to check them out.

How long have you had a problem with depression?  Does it appear to be seasonal (perhaps in the Fall/Winter), somewhat situational or consistent? Have you talked to anyone about it or gotten any therapy or treatment?  Have you tried using exercise, mindfulness, meditation or any means of self-soothing to manage it?

If you are able to share some examples or problems with your sister's controlling behaviors, we can perhaps share some specific lessons.

Take care. I'm glad you joined our Community and we look forward to hearing more or your story.  It can be helpful to write out what's bothering you.

Hi Janemurray,

Welcome

I'd like to join Naughty Nibbler and welcome you to bpdfamily. Naughty Nibbler has a lot of good advise, I just wanted to touch on depression, I have depression and anxiety too, she's right, eat healthily, get enough sleep, exercise, self care, see a doctor they may prescribe you medication, mindfulness and CBT. Have you talked to your GP, T or P ( T stands for therapist, P stands for either psychologist or psychiatrist)

Sometimes there's stress from work, or my kids and I have an ex wife with BPD traits, i'll take do extra self care when things get stressful with some or all of them and even though that it's under control for me, I have to stay on top of it so that my depression or anxiety doesn't revert back to where it's difficult to function. Tell us more about yourself, I look forward to it. You're not alone.
