Confusion and Feeling Trapped in Relationship

For forty years off and on, back and forth I have been trying to make sense of my romantic relationship.  One time he loves me so much, tells me there is nothing wrong with me and then another time he tells me, "it is me, it is always me".  And he is sick and tired of it. Then he gives me the silent treatment until I have enough and I say I am sorry and agree it is me. Then he is nice to me again until it happens again.  When he treats me so nice I feel love for him.  I have been going back and forth in this relationship for forty years.  I feel emotionally abused and I do not know how to change it or end it or know who it is coming from.  Please help!
