My sister has depression, an eating disorder and BPD. She attempted suicide a year and a half ago and again less than a month ago. I spent the night in the hospital with her both times, showed her my support and love. This last time I spent hours researching treatment facilities and helping her figure out her short term disability. I emptied her home of lethal items and had her stay with my family and me. Now she’s leaving treatment after a couple of weeks, and though she plans to continue treatment, I’m terrified she’ll attempt suicide again—especially if I don’t do enough to help her. I don’t know if I’m enabling her with all I do, or if it’s selfish of me to be resentful. I don’t know how to help anymore. I’d love some insight. Thanks.

Hi Hopenotlost Welcome new member (click to insert in post)

It is a sad reality that people with disorders such as depression and BPD, sometimes struggle with active suicidal ideation leading them to attempt suicide. I am very sorry your sister is having these problems and can only imagine how tough this must be for you as well.

Where is your sister now? Is she still staying with you and your family?

We have some resources here that can be helpful when a family-member suffers from suicidal ideation:
Dealing with suicidal ideation in others

I am glad you are reaching out here for support and advice, this definitely is a difficult situation to deal with. Keep faith though, for indeed hope is not lost
