I don't really know where to begin.  I have a sister who made a recent suicide attempt which brought to light that she has BPD and that I have been affected by her disorder.  She has been depressed and suicidal my whole life.  She received a diagnosis of BPD years ago.  At the time I heard from the BPD that BPD was a label given by medical professionals when they are unable to diagnose a mental health issue.  As I have felt frustrated by the mental health industry I did not question her reasoning at the time.    Having read what BPD actually is, I recognize that BPD is a serious and complex disorder that she displays many symptoms of.   As alcoholism is a family issue also, I have received a fair amount of emotional support through the Alanon program in regards to learning self-care as a priority, but her recent suicide attempt really brought to light how greatly I have been affected and I am just reaching out for support.

Hi 2befree and welcome!

I am sorry to hear about your struggles with your sister.  NPD is very serious and the suicidal ideation can be particularly brutal to cope with.

How do you feel her disorder has affected you?  What other behaviors does she engage in?

I am glad you have learned good self care.  That is vital and something many of us here are trying to learn.

I hope you post more and in the meantime settle in and read and jump into other threads.  We all support each other here and we can all relate to having a family member with BPD or BPD traits.

Again Welcome

Hi 2BFree.  You'll find the support here for sure.  It's an interesting journey, to find out about BPD, and its impact on you
