My little brother (25 years old) has BPD

Hello-
My little brother has BPD.  He was diagnosed Nov 2019.  He’s 25 now, id say he was relatively normal until about 21/22, but the last few years he hasn’t been for person I use to know.  I am starting to read about BPD and this age is when a lot of people show signs, but I just don’t get how he went from a shy kid with low self esteem to someone who completely falls apart and tries to self injure when they realize they lost their keys.  No one was in even mad.  Is it possible to get him back to where he was a few years ago? The “triggers” I can think of around that time were he started smoking weed and had a bad breakup with his first gf.  Not sure if those triggered this, and if they did can it be untriggered? Any advise is greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Is there any genetic predisposition to emotional sensitivity in the family? There's more research coming out about the genetics involved. Sometimes an invalidating environment can make things doubly hard for people who are prone to emotional dysregulation.

Since fear of abandonment is so triggering for someone with BPD, I can imagine his first break up was a doozy.

How does your brother get along with family?

There are specific skills that can help support a BPD family member -- they aren't intuitive and must be learned (and practiced ... ). Is there someone in the family he seems to trust?
