My PBD dd text me today, saying she thought she was going to check herself in to the hospital because she thought she was having a nervous breakdown. Of course my saying if you feel you need some help then that might be good. Well all hell broke loose. My saying that let to her saying see agree I am crazy, etc etc why do you hate me, etcc.
She then said, if i go check myself in then I will custody of my kids. Does anyone know this to be a fact. She could go to counseling as well but i can't mention that either. I just want to know if this is true. She says it is.

From what I've read over the years, it's certainly not automatic. Generally it depends on whether she can care for the children. Even long term hand-holding by the professionals and at-the-edge-of-the-seat parenting may not cause her to lose custody, though perhaps it could. So many factors are involved.
Since this is such an emotional issue, as it would be for jsut about anyone, it's not surprising she overreacted. She was primed to flame back at you despite your trying to be a circumspect as possible. Did she expect you to say, "No, you don't need to seek help?"

Dear foreverdad,
She may very well have wanted me to respond, no you don't need that. Good point.
I am thinking I should have responded with "you sound like you are really struggling or something like that". It is hard because had I said anything like well instead of going to a hospital you might check out other things. I don't know. She really fights counseling.
