Are pwBPD capable of telling their friends and family wild and ridiculously fantastic stories about their husbands and wives? I mean stories that are completely over the top even to the extent that they make their husbands and wives sound like  nut cases?

And secondly if they do then what is the purpose for doing so? Is it just to gain attention or to make people feel sorry for them?

Yes they are. I have proof one of my ex's did. And I assume the most current one has too. They do it so they can be the victim, and get sympathy from others. In a nutshell, attention. That is what they crave. They fear being alone and abandoned so much they will do nearly anything to get people to interact with them, feel for them, and be sucked in by their sob stories. It's hard not to take it personal, but it's basically a defense mechanism/survival tool for them.

How Far Will They Go?

As far as they need to!

I remember trying my hardest to ignore the abuse and she simply said worse and worse things... .  for hours... .  until she finally said something that made me angry.

Generally, no.

My separated dBPDw would not invent any story that I am aware of.  In the end, her story-telling about me to others did get colored by her intense emotions (driven by pain), but as for facts, nope, never did she fabricate stuff.

There were certain colorful characterizations, such as 'monster'.  I usually didn't agree with these... .   

And in the beginning, it was the 'same'.  No re-writing of the facts, but I was 'superman'

Helps if we can strip away the chaos where appropriate and get down to facts, and to stop generalizing.  'They' are a large group of individuals.  'We' alleged nons are a large group too, and I do not want to be painted with all-y'all's behaviors - except for your behaviors that are really cool and good
