Hey Guys,

After a rather unpleasant birthday last year and an entire two months of not really relaxing and doing all the house work while my mum sat on her ass watching television I've decided that I want to try a little experiment.

Instead of spending the entire summer living at my mother's house I'm going to fund my own summer holiday out of pocket and do something grown up, independent and fun.

I've been planning this all year, I found this cute little apartment in Europe and I'm renting it for a month so I'll have my own place where I can entertain guests. A few friends and relatives will be passing through and sleeping over so they can visit the city I'm staying in too. My boyfriend is coming as well which will be nice and we can celebrate his birthday together.

I've got two weeks until my summer holidays start and that anxiety I usually feel around now? Well... . I'm just not feeling it! I'm actually looking forward to a holiday, it will be costing me my own money I've earned from my own job but I don't care. I'm excited, I hope my holiday is wonderful and that all of yours are too!

Hi  !

Travelling was the best thing happened to me, I always knew it was because I felt free when travelling, but now I understand a big part of it was because I felt free from my BPD Mum. If I made a mistake of any kind, people around helped me and made me feel like mistakes where normal, that was such a relief! I actually consider "travelling" my home.

I wanted to recommend you this website www.couchsurfing.com, it's highly trustworthy, it's easy to meet travelers and locals who will be happy to show you around and most people is so positive about life. In most cities there are weekly meetings. I met incredible people and made friends I'm still in contact and visit whenever I can. It's the opposite of BPD!

It is likely at some point when getting ready for the trip, if something goes slightly wrong you may feel you are spending too much money, or maybe you shouldn't go... . Don't even think about it! you are going to have a great summer, I'm actually jelaous as I will be studying heh  Being cool (click to insert in post)

Hey January and Geeky!

Yes you're right it is supposed to be fun, it's strange the times that I've travelled alone have always been pretty stress free which is such a contrast to the holidays I remember as a child. My parents always managed to turn every holiday into a nervous breakdown, especially the travelling part, anything to do with planes and being somewhere at the right time was so embarrassing as we'd inevitably end up being late. I always found it really embarrassing when I was travelling with friends and their parents and wonder why they could do everything in such a calm, civilised manner but my family were so disorganised and bitter about everything.

I know that it's a bit more stressful when you've got kids but if you plan ahead it shouldn't be as insane as my family holidays were. I hope when I have a family we can holiday with a bit more grace and dignity

That sounds really great!  The independence, the new environment - it sounds like it will be fantastic!  It's so true that after the nightmares we go through at home, the scariest stuff the world has to throw at us (international travel! alone!) is not so scary, and even a pleasure!

Enjoy!

Hi Zubizou,

That sounds great! I'm actually doing the same thing as you this summer, and you're right, it does feel very freeing. I like that it's just me and that I can explore the city and meet people without having to constantly worry about somebody else getting stressed out.

I've just started using couchsurfing too, and it looks pretty useful/trustworthy.

Hope you enjoy your summer! Smiling (click to insert in post)
