Hello all,
I have been reading so many resources on teens with BPD since learning that our 16 year old daughter is exhibiting many of the traits. Looking forward to having a place to learn more parenting and coping strategies, it's so difficult at times!

Hi there nursemom,
.
You have come to the right place! This community is full of people who, like you, are doing their best to understand and better handle people who suffer from BPD. There are many resources here which can be of use to you.
A parent's greatest wish is for their child, whatever their age, to be healthy and happy. When a child suffers from BPD, often not only is the child unhappy and unhealthy, but so is everyone who loves them. This mental illness severely affects everyone, creating drama and heartbreak, while also piling on the guilt and anxiety. Most parents search desperately for answers, and try all the gimmicks that popular culture tells us should work - only to face even more severe rages and acting out behavior.
There are answers though, and we are here to offer you the support and encouragement to help you reach those goals. There are things that can be done to stop making things worse and begin to make them better. A great place to start is with this set of resources:
What can a parent do?
We look forward to seeing you on the

Glad to have you here!

Hi nursemom22 I would like to join the welcome
It is so difficult to be the mom of a teenager with BPD or BPD traits. I remember the chaos only too well.
You seem focussed on learning parenting strategies and there is much guidance and support to be gained here. I would like to encourage you to explore the site here and familiarise yourself with it. There are many resources here such as articles, workshops and of course the boards where we discuss our concerns and our learning.
Our own journey as a mom of a child with BPD is indeed difficult, but the rewards for us are great and there is hope. Welcome aboard
I look forward to hearing more of your story. Are there siblings in the family? I assume that her father lives with you, is that right?
Cheers,
Vivek

I'm still struggling to find the right therapist for my daughter, who very much wants help handling herself. Due to her age (just now 18), the professionals have not given her the dx of BPD nor have they explained it to her - she has a dx of anxiety and depression, has had self injurious behaviors and is a victim of repeated sexual assault - needless to say - I keep looking for that person/team who will work with her - part of it is her time constraints - she's managed to stay very involved in what she loves to do and I don't want to pull her out of that for therapy.
Seeing a new counselor today - hope it's the solution!

Hi nursemom22,
I'm glad you came back and posted -- I recently found a therapist for my son and the two of them really clicked. It really does make a different to find the right one. Are you in an area where you can easily find people with expertise treating teens with BPD? My son just started metacognitive therapy for depression and anxiety and it seems to have had a positive effect, even though S13 will not exactly admit it
Let us know how you liked the new counselor.
It's also great to hear that your D18 has something she loves doing and is very involved.

It isn't uncommon for therapists and counselors to with hold telling patients that they have BPD.
Sometimes it can do more harm than good... .it depends on the therapist's beliefs (stigma) and the patient's needs as the therapist sees them.
What kind of therapy does the new therapist practice? CBT? DBT?
Let us know ok?
