This is my first post. We are still reeling from the past month. Our 27 year old son tried to overdose and has been in a treatment facility for 30 days. He was diagnosed with BPD there. We suspected that he had it but now it's official. At least now, I think he's ready to get help for his condition. He has to move in with us until he gets a bed at a longer term treatment facility. I'm really nervous about that mainly because he and his younger brother had a huge blow-up which led to his moving out the first time. How do we set some bounderies in order to keep the peace? He has no where else to go and there's no alcohol here which makes sobriety easier. Any advice is welcome!

Hello sarahde,

Welcome

Welcome to our this website, having a child with BPD can be very taxing. We worry about them, want to help them, and at the same time, we are worrying about how we are going to protect ourselves and our family members from them... .

A parent's greatest wish is for their child, whatever their age, to be healthy and happy. When a child suffers from BPD, often not only is the child unhappy and unhealthy, but so is everyone who loves them. This mental illness severely affects everyone, creating drama and heartbreak, while also piling on the guilt and anxiety.

There are answers to your questions, and there's a lot we can do to help make the situation better. We are here to offer you the support and encouragement to help you reach those goals.  Would you like to join us on theSupporting a son or daughter suffering from BPD board?

This set of resources is a great one to start, you will also find it on the Parenting board: What can a parent do?

You found the right place. How long before your son comes home?

sarahde

My older dd had a lot of anger towards my younger BPD dd16... .focus on your younger son and try and make him understand his borther is ill... .try to educate him and set some boundaries for him... .your son hopefully will get into a long term place soon and get the help he needs. The fact he is ready for help should be celebrated. Can I suggest that your other son stay with a friend or family member for the short time? If this is what is worrying you it might be best all around... .
