I am interested to know how things have gone for others when the last adult child leaves home. Did things improve due to less stress or did they get worse due to abandonment fears?

Good question! I think you're going to get a variety of responses.

I'm guessing that you're asking about what happens to the children of a pwBPD after all of the children leave home. It really depends on the parent-child relationship. Some parents (and not just ones with BPD) will stay very involved in their children's lives. Some don't.

Would you be comfortable telling us a little more about your situation? That might help us give you the information you're looking for.

Thanks for the reply. What I was interested in is how the parent with BPD coped after all their children had left home, not the other way around.

OK, thanks for clearing that up. You'll find responses from the children of BPD parents here, and they can share what happened from their own experiences. I found that my BPD mother definitely went through some "empty nest" feelings once her children moved out, and started looking for others outside of the family to parent... . from her pets to inviting others to live in her home.
