Before you can make things better, you have to stop making them worse... Have you considered that being critical, judgmental, or invalidating toward the other parent, no matter what she or he just did will only make matters worse? Someone has to be do something. This means finding the motivation to stop making things worse, learning how to interrupt your own negative responses, body language, facial expressions, voice tone, and learning how to inhibit your urges to do things that you later realize are contributing to the tensions.

What I did was Google therapists in my area. Once I had a list of contenders based on geography, I kept the ones who accepted my insurance or offered reimbursement options. From there I narrowed the list farther to those who specifically indicated a specialty with personality disorders in general. Then I called the top three contenders for more info, specifically inquiring about experience with BPD. The one I chose had specific experience with BPD, actively treated a fair number of patients in recovery and ran a DBT group. So far it has worked out awesome because she understood the nuances of the disorder and totally "got" what I was talking about. Typing this reminds me that I need to call for an appointment.

Anyway I would start with a similar process. I have found general counselors weren't well versed enough to help and religious counselors - that I saw anyway - were too "stay married regardless of how bad it gets" for me. If you go to Psychology Today they maintain a list of therapists by location so that would be a good place to check initially too.

Good on you!

Psychology Today - Find a Therapist

Always phone and chat to them about what their speciality is first - someone well versed in BPD is always helpful. We don't really need a therapist with DBT experience. DBT is great for us too however if you are looking for a DBT therapist for your wife, your wife needs to seek that out not you.

Also BPD_support we don't always click with the first therapist we see. My first one reminded me of my great aunt! Second one I found is a gem and have been seeing her for 2 years - invaluable.

Often our own issues come out in therapy - which is a wonderful thing. My choice in partner was certainly reminiscent of my childhood. I have a BPD parent.

Hope this helps
