If someone knew they had BPD and consciously tried to get better would that help them in the long run or is seeing a therapist the only way they will get better?

or is the disorder too overwhelming for them to handle by themselves?

Well, the reason for therapy specifically DBT therapy is so they can learn coping mechanisms that they have never learned before. Knowing about the disorder helps but it doesn't make the disorder go away on it's own, even if the person is trying. They don't really know what parts of them are dysfunctional so it's not uncommon for them to go into a rage and actually accuse the other person of being mentally ill even though they know they are messed up. It's just the nature of the disorder.

The therapy is necessary because they won't learn the much needed coping mechanisms to recognize their behaviors and ways they can curb the really dysfunctional ones.

My husband is fully aware of his mental problems, the more he learns about why he is the way he is, the better he can cope with it and his therapist is pretty awesome too.

It's not the future you are afraid of, it's repeating the past that makes you anxious.
