My mother went into a rage and is trying to convince me to go to a group home and get on SSI because she thinks I'm 'crazy'.

Actually I'm depressed, due to all the abuse I'm enduring living here. I'm desperately trying to find a better paying job so I can save up and move out. But she recently threatened me with objects and told me that I need to be in a group home because I am nutty and not that bright. What should I do?

Hi, karma,

I am sorry to hear you are feeling depressed. I have been depressed before and understand how hard it can be.   It is good that you are working hard toward your goal of moving out on your own, and that you are reaching out for support.

I don't know you or your history, so it is impossible for me to say what will be best for you. Do you have access to professional counseling? Do you trust your mother's opinions about you, or could they be influenced by her disorder? Maybe it would be best to seek a professional opinion from a therapist or doctor.

I am concerned about the physical abuse and threats you are going through at home. Have you ever considered talking with a domestic violence center? It is important to have a plan in place for your safety, so calling a local hotline just to chat and get suggestions can be really helpful. We can put you in touch with resources in your area. There is also information about making a safety plan here: Safety First

I hope you will stay in touch with us here, kharma. Has anything changed in the past few days?

Wishing you peace,

PF
