In looking at what would make me stop caring, I've had to ask myself "what is the difference between validating and enabling?" How can you validate someone who has verbally abused you or lied to you? How is that not enabling? I find it very hard to be sympathetic to someone who has painted me black or projected all of their negative characteristics on to me as if its somehow "my fault". Has anyone else ever asked themselves this question and come up with an answer?

Search on this site for validating and boundaries. Lots to read.

You validate how they FEEL, but can choose to not accept their behaviour through personal boundaries.
