My son 22 who hasn't spoken to me for 6 months now I thought was BPD. However, the diagnosis now looks like schizophrenia, does anyone have experience of this? I'm heartbroken.

Hi Daisy67,

Schizophrenia can sound scary. But an accurate diagnosis is key to receiving the correct treatment. With the proper medication regimen and ongoing treatment by both therapist and psychiatrist, people with schizophrenia can have a good quality of life. Many work, have families, etc.

NAMI has good educational materials that may be of help.

Good luck to you and your son.

Hi Daisy67, 'm sorry to hear about your son, it has to be very hard. Does your son smoke marijuana? In some people (particularly young males, my wife's psychiatrist says) marijuana use can lead to exhibition of schizophrenic symptoms.

Thanks for responses, I'll check out the organisation.  Yes he does smoke marujana,  his uncle on his father's side has schizophrenia.  He has sms me again today that he doesn't like or love me and wants nothing more to do with me. It's been 6 months now. He is my only child, I can't cope with this  even with counselling  I think I'll have to start an anti-depressant.

I agree... .the NAMI classes I took were wonderful and there were many people dealing with this same illness with their children. There are medications for it which is wonderful news for you! There aren't any for BPD. The sooner you can get him help the better. Take the classes... .I highly recommend them!

I'm in UK I don't think we have NAMI. I'll look around online. My main problem is he won't speak to me, every time I attempt contact he responds in a vile detestful way which just hurts so much. I don't know how to get through to him.

This looks helpful.  As someone else said the good thing about schizophrenia is it is treatable.  I know it sounds scary and I'm sorry you are going through this.
