Hi korben_dallas welcome to our online community

Being the child of an alcoholic parent can be very difficult. Did your parent ever get help for these issues?

You are an adult now and I'm glad you're educating yourself about this subject matter. Could you tell us a bit more about your parent's behaviors that you found/find most difficult to deal with?

What level of contact do you currently have with your parent?

Take care and I hope to read more of your story later

Hi Korben,

I've attended ACA groups and there is a lot of overlap in family/relationship dynamics with alcoholism and dysfunction ( BPD and other causes). Often the two conditions overlap as well- substance abuse and BPD. I have found both communities- this board and ACA ( our group includes adult children of dysfunction) to be helpful.

Although there isn't as distinct a "laundry list" for children of parents with BPD, I found that I related to a lot of the items on the ACA laundry list. One that stood out to me was "we became reactors rather than actors". In this sense, we can feel out of control when we are constantly reacting to other people rather than choosing how to act.

The relationship tools on this board help us to stay centered, to not escalate circular arguments, and to not participate on the "drama triangle". I think you will find them helpful. I also think you will see how both programs can help achieve the same goal- to interact with our families in a more emotionally stable way, and to act on our own choices.
