Before you can make things better, you have to stop making them worse... Have you considered that being critical, judgmental, or invalidating toward the other parent, no matter what she or he just did will only make matters worse? Someone has to be do something. This means finding the motivation to stop making things worse, learning how to interrupt your own negative responses, body language, facial expressions, voice tone, and learning how to inhibit your urges to do things that you later realize are contributing to the tensions.

Reading these comments makes me hate myself more than ever. I don't mean to stress out and hurt those around me. I don't want to be the way I am. I try so ___ing hard to be normal and happy and just calm down but I fail. I don't mean to make my boyfriend's life hell, as some of you said. I don't even know if I have BPD but I act the way these people describe and when I do I just lose control... .I'm not a monster. At least, I don't mean to be. I don't become suicidal and dramatic because I want attention. I become suicidal and dramatic because I perpetually hurt those I love, thus continuing the cycle. I wish I was never born, so I wouldn't be such a burden.

Hi Garth,

Changing behavior is hard!

It takes a lot of courage and strength to make changes.

This site is for family members of BPD sufferers and posts may be triggering. You might find Resources for BPD Sufferers more helpful.

Don't give up. It can get better  Smiling (click to insert in post)
