I’m a long-time weed consumer (~11 years give or take)

I started shortly after my mom (suspected BPD) abandoned me…later died of heroin OD

Of late, I’ve been going without mostly to avoid being judged by others and to save money.

It’s always helped me feel calm and detached…not so needing to be in control

I was informed by a therapist that weed can exacerbate feelings of rage and aggression in some.

I feel irritable and aggressive while not on weed.

I’m curious what others’ have experienced in relation to weed and aggression.

Hi there,
You can plug in weed in the "search BPD Family site " above- that may provide some insight . Also, it depends if you trust where you get yours from and that it's not mixed / laced with anything else. Synthetic weed is also very strong...I can only comment as a parent whose son used / uses weed, but with other stuff a few years back .He also suffered from BPD, so that's a whole other layer.

I’m not into cannabis but the ones who seem more aggressive since it’s been legal in my state smoke in excess. It’s night and day tbh. It’s like a gang of smelly skunks are around them or they haven’t taken a shower and used deodorant for a few years. Frustrated/Unfortunate (click to insert in post)

I have some neighbors who use it but don’t stink up the neighborhood. Their behavior is fine.

first, it makes sense that weed helped you feel calm and detached, especially given the circumstances. children of parents with bpd often grow up feeling like they have to be hypervigilant or in control just to stay emotionally safe, so anything that takes the edge off that internal tension can feel like a lifeline.

what you describe, feeling more irritable and aggressive off weed, is actually pretty common. long-term use can dampen the nervous system, but over time, it can also disrupt natural regulation of emotions like anger or frustration. then, when you remove the buffer, your baseline irritability comes into clearer view. it’s not necessarily that weed caused those emotions — its possible that it’s been masking or displacing them.

maybe the next question is: what is the irritability trying to tell you?
