Hello,
I just discovered this page. My sister was diagnosed with BPD a few years ago. I am going back home for a short vacation with my partner, but the day we are going to be home coincides with her birthday. Birthdays are always when she has the worst breakdowns. I'm nervous about being the target of her frustrations (as this happened a few birthdays ago, and many other times before) this time around.
I love my sister, as she can be so fantastic, but when she turns it is very emotionally draining.
Anyway, I'm glad that a board like this that exists.

Best,

Welcome! I'm new here as well. Going home can be super tough, especially with dysfunctional family members. I always get really worried ahead of time that something bad is going to happen too. The most that I've figured out so far that helps me is trying to make sure I can build in some self-care time, whether that be having quiet time alone in my room or getting out of the house entirely to visit with other people, go to the gym, etc. Sometimes I feel guilty about it, but I know that if I don't take care of myself, I get very irritable really quickly, and that's no fun for anyone. Talking with my partner about it helps too. Best of luck! We're here for you!
