Hi there!

For those of you that searched and found a therapist to help you from dealing with a mother with BPD traits...how did you find your therapist? Is there somewhere online to search for one?

Thanks,
Natalie

I have only found support groups. I just googled children of parents with bpd support groups.

I googled it.  Can’t remember my exact search, but something like clinical counsellor BPD and the name of my town.  I remember getting to a site where registered clinical counsellors were listed ( a governing organization body).  Then I also called a local contact and got a recommendation.  Then I called her to see if she was taking new clients and could help.  Sometimes you need to try more than one counsellor.  Its kind of like not buying the first house or car you look at.  You’ll know soon enough if its a good fit or not.

Things I did..
-phone consultations, most will talk for 5-30 minutes for free to see if it's the right fit
-asked if they had done therapy themselves
-asked if they had dealt with their own family of origin issues

I think it's also based on what your issues are that you want resolved. For me, I have a lot of anxiety issues, so I googled therapy for PTSD, anxiety attacks, etc. I've done loads of CBT and it hasn't done much for me so I have also researched some modalities I'd like to try like EMDR. A lot of people have success with CBT, though, so please don't think I'm saying don't try it.  Good luck!  I have my first appointment in February.
